  4. If only the superficial epithelial 
  5. cells are damaged, the 
  6. fluorescein staining will be 
  7. limited to the area of damage.  
  8. If the full thickness of the 
  9. epithelium is damaged 
  10. fluorescein will seep into the 
  11. stroma giving a larger area of 
  12. staining then the defect.  The 
  13. borders will not be distinct 
  14. since the fluorescein is slowly 
  15. diffusing through the stroma.
